Water Taxis in Bocas del Toro
As I researched transport in Bocas, I read several stories of water taxi drivers falsely elevating prices whenever they saw a tourist headed their way. I can’t speak from personal experience as to whether or not this is true, because we always used the water taxi service Boteros Bocatorenos Unidos on Calle 3 and were always treated fairly and with respect. When we entered the building, a taxi driver approached us and asked, “French? English? Spanish?” and he did his best to speak English the entire trip, and to translate for us when the majority of the boat was Spanish speaking. We primarily used the taxi to get to Isle Bastimentos and Caya Zapatilla. Our driver was very reliable and also offered day tours for a fairly minimal price. We took advantage of this, and were able to see the surrounding islands with a group of ten people. The day tour lasted about 8 hours, and consisted of a trip to Isle Cristobal, several hours at Caya Zapatilla, dinner at a waterfront restaurant (that had questionable sanitation and led to a case of food poisoning so don’t count that part as a plus) and my favorite- 45 minutes with the dolphins in their natural habitat. No nets, no cages, just us and the dolphins. It took about 15 minutes for them to come say hello, but once they did we were able to see an entire pod of dolphins around the boat. The tour was essentially a local showing us all of his favorite spots in the area, and this no-frills tour ended up being a highlight of our trip (minus the food poisoning).
